Module 02 Lab Worksheet: CardiovascularSystem- HeartIntroductionThis weeks lab will focus on understanding the concepts of heart anatomy andblood flow in the body.ObjectivesObjectives for this weeks lab include: 1) Identify the anatomical structures of theheart, 2) Perform a dissection of a heart specimen, 3) Trace the flow of bloodthrough the body and, 4) Review the concepts of the cardiac conduction systemOverviewThe cardiovascular system includes the heart and blood vessels of the body and has,in a very general concept, the responsibility of transporting nutrients throughoutthe body. The heart can be thought of as two pumps that work side by side thatpump blood out to the circuits of the body- pulmonary and systemic circuit. Thepulmonary circuit pertains to blood flow to and from the lungs and the systemiccircuit pertains to blood flow to and from the body. The heart is surrounded by a double walled sac referred to as the pericardium, which serves to protect the heart and provide a frictionless surface for the heart tocontract (beat) within. The heart is composed of three layers: Epicardium, myocardium and endocardium. The epicardium, which is technically part of thepericardium is the outer layer of the heart, the myocardium is composed of cardiacmuscle and the endocardium consists of a thin, frictionless surface that lines theinternal chambers of the heart. Internally the heart is composed of four chambers:Right and left atria, along with the r ...
